Why was NMN Banned on Amazon? Now Legal Again (UPDATE)

Great news for the dietary supplement health space: NMN no longer banned by FDA

It took nearly 4 years, but as of September 29, 2025, NMN supplements are back on the market. You can purchase NMN products again from many of your favorite supplement brands on their websites, platforms on Amazon, and in some niche supplement stores if you prefer in-person shopping experiences.

Why Did Amazon Stop Selling NMN from 2022 to 2025?

In 2022, NMN was removed from its classification as a “dietary supplement” because a company began investigating it as a potential new drug.

When this investigation starts, it automatically triggers a reclassification by the Food and Drug Administration, removing NMN from the dietary supplement category.

This isn't because NMN is unsafe but rather because of the regulations governing how the supplement industry and drugs are classified — a compound cannot be both a dietary supplement and an experimental drug.

But on September 29th, 2025, NMN was reverted to its original dietary supplement status, after a citizen’s petition and the Natural Products Association (NPA) filed a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration to address a lack of clarity regarding NMN’s status.

What Role Did Dr. David Sinclair Play in the NMN Conversation?

Prominent longevity researcher Dr. David Sinclair has been publicly associated with NMN for years due to his academic work on aging and NAD+ metabolism.

He has spoken openly about NMN in interviews, podcasts, and on social media. He has even commented on the FDA’s decision to restore NMN’s dietary supplement status on X, renewing public attention around the compound.

At the same time, Sinclair is a somewhat controversial figure regarding NMN’s regulatory history.

Some critics have accused Sinclair of benefiting from NMN’s temporary removal from the supplement market. These claims center on Sinclair’s advisory role with MetroBiotech, a pharmaceutical company that has researched NMN-derived compounds for potential drug development.

One widely shared post on X alleged that the FDA’s actions favored pharmaceutical interests over consumers, stating that NMN was removed so it could later be developed as a prescription drug for profit rather than remain available as a supplement.

Another commenter claimed that Sinclair and MetroBiotech were ultimately “defeated,” framing the FDA’s reversal as a rejection of any potential monopoly over NMN.

“FDA didn’t ‘regulate’ NMN. They bent over for David Sinclair’s pharma shell company so he could yank your $50/month longevity hack off the shelf and re-sell the identical molecule as a $100k/year drug.”

“Sinclair and MetroBiotech have been defeated. Now there will never be a monopoly.”
— @Anstheticc (Source: Reddit)

In all our research, it appears that David Sinclair doesn’t endorse or sell a commercial NMN supplement, and there is no public evidence showing that he personally directed FDA decisions.

Still, the overlap among his academic research, pharmaceutical development, and regulatory outcomes has made Sinclair a public focal point for frustration over pharmaceutical influence and NMN delays in the supplement industry.

Dietary Supplement Definition: According to the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration defines a dietary supplement as a product intended for ingestion that contains a "dietary ingredient" to supplement the nutritional value of the diet. This can include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and other substances that boost nutrient intake.

Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, dietary supplements don’t require FDA approval before becoming available on the market. However, they’re still regulated.

Manufacturers must register their facilities with the FDA, follow established manufacturing standards, and ensure their products are appropriately labeled and marketed without false or misleading claims.

These products cannot be classified as new drugs or investigated as potential drugs.

In some cases, companies may be required to submit a New Dietary Ingredient Notification (DIN) to the FDA before marketing a new dietary ingredient. A DIN notifies the FDA that an ingredient not sold in the U.S. before October 15, 1994, is reasonably expected to be safe when used as directed.

In NMN’s case, the issue wasn’t because of a lack of safety data, but whether it could legally be sold as a dietary supplement once it became the subject of drug investigations, which overrides the dietary ingredient pathway entirely.

Why Have I Seen NMN on Amazon?

You might see NAD precursors or NMN itself listed on there in the last 4 years, while NMN products were under the FDA ban. This typically means that a seller has managed to slip under Amazon's radar, and the product would likely have been removed once moderators caught it.

But since the NMN ban has been lifted, NMN sales have resumed on Amazon.

We were excited to expand our dietary supplement range to include various forms of NMN products from tablets, capsules, droppers, and powder, and have seen it quickly catch interest, selling over a thousand units a month (and growing) on Amazon since we launched it on the platform.

NMN Alternatives on Amazon

While you can buy NMN on Amazon again, there were always other NAD-supporting dietary supplements like NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) or NAD (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) on the market.

These compounds, like NMN, are known for supporting natural NAD+ levels in the body, which support cellular health and healthy aging, just in slightly different ways.

Still, these NR and NAD  differ chemically from NMN, so they were never under investigation as a prescription drug; so people often turned to these as alternatives to NMN.

Industry Impact: What Happened After NMN Became Legal Again

When NMN officially regained its dietary supplement status in late September 2025, many expected sales to surge immediately. Instead, the opposite happened — at least in the short term in our experience.

In the first week following legalization, we saw a noticeable decline across our NMN product category.

Once the regulatory barrier was removed, hundreds of NMN listings were reinstated across major online platforms almost overnight, creating a sudden increase in competition.

Before this update, NMN availability online was inconsistent.

Some platforms enforced the FDA’s interim classification more strictly than others, and enforcement often varied over time. NMN products periodically appeared, disappeared, or were limited depending on platform policies and moderation practices.

Our NMN Sales Data: Week 40 vs. Week 41 (Pre- vs. Post-Legalization)

Based on our internal Shopify sales data, here’s what we observed immediately after legalization:

  • NMN category total: −32% decline

  • NMN Capsules 900 mg: −49% decline

  • NMN Capsules 500 mg: −42% decline

  • NMN Drops: −17% decline

  • NMN Powder: −64% decline

  • NMN + Resveratrol Capsules: −18% decline

These percentages show the week-over-week change in sales volume for our NMN products from Week 40 to Week 41, comparing before vs. immediately after legalization.

This short-term dip was followed by a recovery period.

By October and November 2025, our NMN sales began to rebound as the market stabilized and consumers became more selective again — prioritizing trusted brands, transparent sourcing, and third-party testing over sheer availability.

How Consumers Reacted to NMN’s Return

Beyond sales data, consumer sentiment across platforms gives context into how people actually felt about NMN becoming a dietary supplement again.

Reddit Discussions

Across longevity, supplement, and biohacking subreddits, and X reactions to NMN’s return, a few consistent themes emerged. Many users expressed relief that NMN was legal again, citing improved affordability and access.

Some shared that they had previously stopped using NMN due to cost or availability, despite feeling it supported their energy levels, and were eager to resume.

Frustration with the FDA was also common, with users sharing their experience of long delays and perceived regulatory inconsistencies. A recurring sentiment was skepticism toward pharmaceutical influence, with some commenters suggesting the earlier restriction favored drug development over consumer access.

The FDA unban has made NMN affordable.

I'm doing iHerb, California gold, around $55 with discounts for 360 175 MG pills. I was on NMN before and it allowed me to overeat and stay trim. I went off due to cost. I cut two Dr prescribed stimulants which just raised my blood pressure.

I am looking forward to the NMN experience again. This is my last ditch effort to heal my body. I never had side effects before. And california gold is third party tested.

I used to take 900 MG a day. Not sure what I'll average now. Started at 700 MG today. Feel great. I really believe in this supplement. I have autoimmune, and this stuff really takes the edge off fatigue. (Source: Reddit)

Wow. I’m surprised. I guess pressuring the FDA does work?

I’ve been calling NMN “illegal”. It’s legal now. But my problem was always with the sellers that were willing to ignore the law. (Source: Reddit)

It will legitimise its useage, it will become a more accessible commodity and useage will increase, as will its inevitable tragedies. By making it ‘mainstream’ and just another form of tobacco and alcohol consumption is dangerous and possibly catastrophic.  (Source: X)

Fascinating update on NMN’s regulatory status. The hair-growth observation is intriguing but still anecdotal; the real value remains its reliable NAD+ boost and morning energy kick. Glad the FDA finally clarified things. (Source: X)

This is good news, but we need more. Creatine has been on the market for 35 years, and it took about 25 before everyone but the luddites agreed it was good for you (the gym bros were much quicker and correct). We can’t wait that long with NMN. We also can’t wait that long for NMN-based drugs. (Source: X)

Amazon Reviews: Consumer Reactions After NMN’s Return

Our early Amazon reviews following NMN’s return as a dietary supplement show a mix of frustration about NMN’s prior removal and welcome its reappearance on the platform.

“I am a big believer in the benefits of NMN and was not happy when the FDA took it off the market… It is now available again as a supplement, and I am happy to add it back into my rotation.”
— Diane St John, November 2025

“Glad to see NMN products back on here. This brand makes good quality products.”
— Frank D, October 2025

Some reviewers also shared skepticism toward the regulatory process itself and concern about potential future restrictions, prompting them to purchase additional units.

“This stuff works, and I bought a bunch just in case.”
— Katherine Bynon, March 2023

While NMN’s return increased competition, it also raised consumer expectations. Shoppers prioritize brands that emphasize transparency, testing, and manufacturing standards, especially after several years of regulatory uncertainty.
